kaiser chiefs digi-pak analysis

The front cover of the kaiser chiefs album "employment" features a quote "box full of tricks" the box is meant to be the album case commenting how good the music is "thrills for all" and box of tricks, a box of tricks is useuall associated with magic or games that are typically used to amuse people.
The illustration is what looks like a box that has been covered in snakeskin or snakeskin paper . Snakeskin is synonumus with the extravagant and special in this case it can be showing that inside the "box full of tricks" is going to be special.
The rear of the cover shows the useual barcode and copyright statements aswell as the records featured on the album however this CD also features the bands website and uses this as extra advertising and increase traffic to the website where they may have other ways to part fans from there money on merchandise.
Inside the digi-pak are the lryics to each of the songs this is not disimilar to digi-paks from other bands, this gives the cd owner or listener a chance to sing along or read them until they now the words. You know you've made it as a band when poeple can sing along to your songs.
Towards the end of the booklet is board game squares and fake money relating back to the cover and the box full of tricks it also introduces the members on a set of cards, it gives us there names and there role in the band. Being on the cards that are in the box is suggesting that they are the tricks inside the boxand listening to them will provide the thrills for everyone.

Digipack Analysis - The kooks: inside in the inside out

The Kooks:

Inside in inside out is an album by the band The kooks.

First think we notice is the contrast between the album title, and the rest of the cover, because of the colour. This contrasts gives a good eye line of sight, and almost make the reader read the album name before they even read who it is by. This maybe shows that this is one of their first albums, when the Kooks were not as famous and well known as they are today.

Dispite the one red title, the rest of the album is black and white. This colour scheme makes it seem more sereal, and make it look more like a freeze frame. This effect gives the audience the feeling they are watching the band play and/or practise thier songs. This gives the audience that sense of voyeurism, because we are looking at the band without them knowing.

Although the majority of the band members are shown waist high, the shot used is actually a long shot, because the drummer is in the shot just at the back. This shot is important because it shows power within the band. The arrangement of the band is key because stereotypically and conventionally the band members are put in order of superiority. For example singer at the front, and drummer at the back. This album has more or less stuck to this convention, however it is not clear who the lead singer is just by looking at the album cover. One is lead to assume though that the two at the front are the two lead singers / guitarists.

The mise-en-scene in this shot is very minimal. Only things shown is the band members holding their instruments and one speaker in the middle of them. This gives the impression that The Kooks are all about the music, and not a fake band that is overly branded, but obviously this is the brand.

Another fact is that you cant see most of the band members faces, it is covered by their hair. This is not only their image and style. It could also represent a fact that they may be the 'any person'. These band members could be anyone, even the audience. This could make the audience feel more of a relation between them and the band, and connect on a more personal level.

digipack analysis- feeder: echo park

In this album cover by Feeder called Echo Park, the main shot is comprised at a high angle of the band and the audience being looked down on which also shows the rest of the background being set in the snowy mountains, with the sunset behind the mountains set with bright yellow and orange colours. The mountains are arranged into a shape which will make their music sound like its echoing, signifying the title name echo park.
This could also signify its concert being played in somewhere completely different which would make them and their music stand out from anyone else's, making it seem like it will possibly echo into them forever.
The title name is positioned in the top left hand corner to contrast with the darker sky colours with the colour of the title similar to the snowy mountains with a thick bold title for the title signifying the thickness of the snow.
The narrative picture shows that they are already well known as a band so they don't really need any further promotion of themselves, then again this is their third album so its pretty likely that they dont need to and their probably popular enough at the time anyway.

Digi-paks

A digi pak is the printed information that you'll will receive upon the purchase of a CD informing you of the tracks that the CD contains and also any copyright policies that the purchaser should be aware of as well as in some circumstances the digi-pak would contain lyrics to the songs or for example of the killers with "day & age" the digi-pak contains illustrations of the artists this also goes for the pigeon detectives who only feature pictures of themselves and their instruments.

record label: sony music entertainment

The music record label we have chosen for the Flight of the Conchords will be sony music entertainment. The reason we have chosen this record label is because it is the second largest music company out of the big four music companies, it is owned by sony cooperation of America which is the american version of the original Japanese Sony cooperation. Artists such as Alicia Keys, Foo fighters and Calvin Harris are all signed onto this company. The picture below is the logo for the sony music entertainment. We feel this is the type of company that would generally take on the act we are trying to portray for our project overall. So for these reasons we have decided to choose this record label.

Website Discussion

Websites for bands now have boomed into a new era with the ever-growing universe of convergent internet technology. Websites now have begun a new marketing and distribution strategy, which in modern day societies, needs to be and appeal and exiting connecting to a broader audience.
Many bands have incorporated such things as "like", Which is a link to the social networking site Facebook. This is a brilliant strategy because hundreds of millions of people use Facebook, including ourselves. There are other likes such as twitter, and youtube. And in the example i will be talking about in a second, They have a link to Itunes which takes you straight to the link to download their new album.
My example here is again from The Kooks (thought i would follow a trend). The Kooks website is a prime example of how convergence and synergy have come together to create a great marketing strategy.

When you first enter the site, you are greeted by a banner which takes up pretty much the majority of your screen. The banner actually alternates between 3 pictures, two of which are of the band. However the other one is of an up-coming concert the Kooks will be attending.
The second thing you can notice is a video that does not play automatically. This is just below the banner. This video is a song of theirs. This is a good idea, which many band have incorporated into their websites. A really goodexample of this is the first website White Lies ever made. their website literally only consisted of a song that played automatically as soon as you went onto the website, literally nothing else apart from a black screen. This caused massive hype and wonder for the band before they launched themselves, and have now got a proper website advertising themselves like other bands.

Finally, at the bottom of the webpage you have all the latest news of The Kooks and what they are up too, which is up to date. And also you have a link to their blog. The use of a blog is a good idea because the band would constantly report to their fans, making the relationship with their fans more personal.

advertising

Artists use varying methods, these days particularly with the internet cyber adds are becoming more popular such as a banner ad on a you tube video of Rihanna already popular artist whose video has racked up a total of almost 100 million views that means that the banner ad featured just under the video would of had at least 100 million people view the add with half as many actually following the link from the advert. Youtube also has an advert at the start of a video which means anyone wanting to view the video will have to watch the advert therefore being forced to view whatever is being advertised.
This is a good method of advertising because of the sheer amount of people who would have viewed the advert therefore getting publicity.

Intertextualities

An Intertextuality is where you bring ideas, previously used in other media texts, such as films/books/life and you bring them into your product. For example Blink 182 used lot of intertextualities.
They are mainly used to make fun of other things, and too make their product more humorous. However they can also be used to relate to the audience on a deeper level, maybe even to connect to them on a more intelligent level, and only some may get the hidden pragmatics. Clever Comedy.

We are thinking on including intertextualities mainly for the humorous part of it. Examples we have discussed are making fun of some famous music video's and artist such as Britney Spears, Tempa T, and Bob Dylan's music video which involves the lyrics being on the cards. We want to include these Intertextualitys to make the video more entertaining.
